The whole of Shellharbour City Warriors Baseball club are celebrating a dream come true after their Major League Third Grade side defeated Cardinals 6 runs to 2 in the IBL Third Grade Grand Final at Fred Finch Park last Saturday.

In a game postponed due to rain the week before Warriors and Cardinals both played strongly throughout. Cards were forced to play catch up baseball right from the top of the first innings with lead off batter “Barney” Miller being batted in on a single by Andy Piper after gaining first base on a walk and second on a Cards error.

Warriors scored two more runs in the second and were retired in order without scoring in the top of the third after which Cards raised the excitement level by capitalising on Warriors’ only error of the game to score twice and go into the top of the fourth trailing by the lone run.
Warriors scored again in the fourth with Mic Talty being batted in from second by a towering two base hit into the left field fence by Troy Crowther.

Both sides failed to add to their tally until the top of the sixth where Warriors brought another two across the plate; Scott Beaumann’s solid sacrifice fly to ccntre field bringing Barney Miller in and Troy Crowther crossing after being given safe by umpire Gordon Lester on a close play at home plate from a pass ball.

Cards last gasp effort to score 5 runs in their last at bat to lift the trophy was spoiled by the Warriors’ pivots when the first batter up was retired after driving to shortstop Rick Clark. Two batters later second base man Barney Miller combined with Clark to pull off a clinical 4-6-3 double play to end Cards innings and give Warriors a well deserved 6 runs, 5 hits and 1 error victory over Cardinals 2 runs, 8 hits and 2 errors.

Best of the Warriors’ batters were Andy Piper with two singles from four at bats, doubles from Barney Miller and Troy Crowther (1 RBI) and Dale Chudleigh’s timely single earning him two runners batted in.
Warriors’ fielding was tight on the day with second baseman Barney Miller working hard with five assists and one error. Adam Williams at left field and Andy Piper at centre field gave the outfield a thousand percent fielding average, taking one fly ball apiece.

Play of the day began from a Talty pick off attempt at first with quick thinking and a pin point throw from first baseman Geoff Piper to Troy Crowther at third resulting in Crowther tagging out a stealing Cards runner coming from second.

Honours in the game were shared equally between the pitching and batting with neither dominating.
Cards pitchers Michael Collis (5 inn; 4 K’s, 4 hits) and Adam Thomas (1 inn; 2 K’s, 1 hit) were on a par with Warriors’ pitcher Mic Talty who pitched 6 innings, 6 strikeouts, giving up 8 hits.

Cardinals and Warriors players alike are to be congratulated in putting on an excellent exhibition of baseball. Three errors total during the game shows how tightly both teams fielded.

Adding to the side triumphing after coming into the semis in fourth place is the fact that it was Warriors’ first season in the Illawarra Baseball Major League.

Warriors’ club President Terry Williams found it difficult to hide his elation,

“What a fantastic way to finish our first season in the Majors. We have worked hard to get here and shown results. With our new ground at Shellharbour coming on line next season and the Junior Warriors’ club commencing training this week for the summer comp. I feel that we have turned a corner today. We now have the capability to properly develop the baseball talents of players of all ages that wish to play baseball in Shellharbour City.”

Warriors’ Junior baseball teams under 8’s to 16’s will commence training at King George VI oval, Port Kembla (opposite the swimming pool) every Thursday commencing at 4.00pm.
Contact numbers are 42 718469 or 42 954877.

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5110673281018741346" style="margin: 0px auto 10px; Specially invited guest compere and legendary lawn bowler Troy Somerville kept the night moving along at a clipping pace, putting pressure on the participants all the way down to the wire. As is usual in any baseball events involving Warriors, competition was fierce but fair. When the seventh and final round came up there were two teams tied, Geoff Piper’s “10½” pins and Mrs. Hatts “Mixed Bag” side.
Always competitive, Geffro’s team of family and friends thought that his team had it in the bag but he had not allowed for Mrs Hatt’s cunning in her team selection. Drawing from years of experience Mrs Hatts brought in wildcard participants Barney, Cathy and Clarkey. Already knowing that she basically had a solid team with key players Stuey and Ann (he looks intelligent, she is!) from the Scorer’s Association, Mrs Hatts’ (at right) usual poker face gave away nothing.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the room, important decisions were being discussed. Things such as “What sort of shots are we going to get next?” and “It’s all your fault! I’ll have a headache tomorrow!” were being bandied about on Michelle and Jody’s "Simply the Best" table. Dave, Dale, Fiona and Andy were kept amused by their entertaining banter all evening.
Heads were being scratched at AJ’s table with Captain Jack the fishing tragic (at left), acting dumb and refusing to tell his triviamates what sailors measure wind speed in. ("Knots ??? I only tie 'em, don't measure 'em!! Arr Arr.")
Over the back Terry’s mob, "US", kept quiet all evening, until the spoon game where Mic the panelbeater came to the fore, inventing five different ways to get the spoon through the clothing of five different players - all illegal! On yer Mic, you are a real “hands on” bloke.
Chuckles, being a Sparkey and used to putting stuff through conduit, offered his expertise to his team mates, an offer that was kindly refused by his son (left below).

Where is that spoon? Pics by Troy

Special mention must be made in results of the game where you lost ticket off yourself when sprung saying the word “answer’. No surprise that Janet finished up with all of the tickets from people at her table in five minutes. Talk about paying attention. You’re deadly Janet!! Tezza lost his ticket in a record 15 seconds.

Play of the day goes to Barney in the closest to the bottle, coming in after the 30 second warning with a toucher from a canon off the next closest coin. The crowd went wild!!! Overheard on the way out at the end of the night Clarkey was still trying to tell Barney that the shot was made possible because Clarkey had lent him the coin and they should share the spoils. Negotiations continued far into the carpark.

When the final count came in ----- Ta Daaaaaaa!!! To that ends we will be calling an Extraordinary General Meeting of all people and players interested in the creation of this team (or teams) to be held on Thursday November 16 at the Warilla Sports Club; the same night we farewell Richard and Holly. The meeting will commence at 7.30 pm.

We have an experienced Major League coach that has expressed an interest as well as some other players from the Majors.

Ø We will definitely not be looking at entering a team in Major League First Grade next season.
Ø The Minor and Major aspects of the Warriors will not be separated. The Warriors’ Executive will cover all grades. There will be no “us and them” politics tolerated. We are all “Warriors” together!!
Ø Those players that wish to make themselves available for Sunday only or Saturday only will have their wishes respected
Ø Training is expected to commence late January

Things to consider that we will need for the Saturdays :
*Assistant Coach, Executive Officer, Scorer/Statistician, Gear Steward
*Hopefully, we can put a strong enough team together to enter Second Grade
*Ideally, we will have enough to enter Second and Third Grade
*Canteen Staff
*A new set of playing shirts
*We need to recruit players now. All Warriors can help in this by spreading the word.
*The Major League team(s) will be a squad from star to finish of the season
*If the IBL will not allow us to play home games at Howard Fowles, which other club can we approach to run home games with?

Issues dealing only with the formation of a Major League team will be discussed at this meeting.

Any player interested in playing Major League for Warriors next season is welcome to attend.

Anyone with anything that they feel should be discussed or that they can contribute toward this goal can voice their opinion by coming along to one of our General Meetings or by making a comment on this post.

New Scorers Training Up

Five new scorers are well on their way to earning their pencils after attending the IBL Scorers Association clinic last Tuesday night. It was great to see Leeanne, Rhonda, Mic St., Carolyn and Hollywood all roll up.

Dave revelled in the fact that it was the first time since kindergarten that nobody laughed when he got his favourite coloured pencils out to play with.

Judy from the Scorers association ran everybody there through their paces. No mucking about with Judy! Straight into the line-ups and then bang! The phantom game starts and strikes, balls, hits, walks, fly balls, pass balls and errors start flying thick and fast.

There was no time for idle chat as everyone had heads down and pencils breaking speed records as they raced across the pages. There were plenty of experienced scorers on hand to help out and the people new to scoring managed to get a bit of a feel for the friendly banter that goes on between scorers behind the back net in the "best seat in the house".

Mrs Hatts helped Dave, Michael and Carolyn without having a nervous breakdown (amazing!) while Stuey helped out Rhonda. Poor Leeanne had to suffer my help and deserves great praise for her calmness.

I'm sure that I speak for all of us in saying a big thank you to Ann for organising the night and to Judy for being a knowledgeable and patient "teacher". The time went very quickly and we all learnt a lot.

Looks like there will be five people that will be treated very well by the Warriors' playing roster next season.

That is, of course, unless those players are willing to rack up a heap of errors in their stats.

________________________________________________

****** How well do you know the baseball rules??? *******

Click on the "interactive baseball rules quiz" link above the visitors counter to find out!!

____________________________________________

Farewell Dinner for Richard and Holly Planned Thursday November 16

Richard and Holly are off to Adelaide next month.

Whenever I go to the Grove to buy a lasagne I always seem to bump into Richard and Holly.

Sadly, the last time I bumped into them Richard asked for the Warriors to give him a clearance to play baseball in Adelaide.

It seems that his all round baseball skills have been noticed interstate; negotiations have been completed and the transfer signed for an undisclosed sum.

As a player Richard was always available, never complained, even when put out in the boon docks. He's got a great swing that is the envy of many players in the club. Pity the pitchers had so much trouble hitting the centre of it.

I'd like to thank you both for the pleasure of your company this season. You have supported every event we held this season and we really apreciate it.

Therefore, on Thursday Novemeber 16 at 6pm I would like to ask you both to come along to the Sporties where the Warriors will be able to have a $6 steak or schnitzel, a bit of a drink, and for us all to wish you all the best in person. All Warriors are invited.

Thanks Richard, thanks Holly; "Played hard, done good!!!" Emcee Michael St John kept proceedings running smoothly and his presentations of the unofficial awards were met with much mirth and amusement.

In attendance to help with the presentations were invited guests Peter Clifford, Vice president of the Illawarra Baseball League; IBL Life Member Wal Smith, Illawarra Umpires Association President Gordon Lester along with Clarrie Bailey and Trevor Tretheway representing Warilla Sports Club Board of Directors.

It was good to see so many supporters turning up on the night. Wives, girlfriends, husbands, kids and relatives. I'm sure we all agree that your support is very much appreciated. Thanks!!

Peter Jones (pictured) received the Clubperson of the Year award from IBL Life Member Wal Smith in recognition of his services. A quiet achiever, Pete always seems to be there when there is something to be done; whether setting up the ground or dismantling it, filling in when teams are short or helping out coaching bases or at training.

And The 2006 Winners were:

Accolades for Third Grade were presented by Coach Terry Williams and Club Treasurer Peter Rogers with the MVP award going to rookie Kevin Gamble. Peter Benny won the batting with a .455 average while Michael St. John got the fielding with .959

IUA President Gordon Lester and coach Mic Talbot presented Andrew Piper with the MVP award for Second Grade; Mark Douglas (.375) got the batting and Amie Teixeira (.984) received the fielding award.

Coach Dave Daley and IBL Vice President Peter Clifford presented Dale Chudleigh with the First Grade MVP award; Chris Guillame (.630) got the batting and Liam Talbot (.929) topped the fielding.

IBL Life Member and Umpire Wal Smith presented Brad Dore with Rookie of the Year award.

Speeches from official guests Peter Clifford, Gordon Lester, Wal Smith, Trevor Tretheway and Clarrie Bailey during the evening were all very supportive of the Warriors' Baseball Club and gave an insight into the high regard in which the Warriors are held in circles outside our own club.

After the official presentations were completed it was on with the karaoke, when after a bit of a shy start Amie and Michelle got the place hopping. Di put on a superb performance as did Geoff and Mick Tex. The group rendition of "We Are The Champions" was a special. All in all, it seems as if everybody had a good time which is what it's all about, isn't it?

If you wish to see some Presentation Night photos, you can click on Awards to see the awards photos (57 photos) or People to see the people pics (51 photos).

That brings to a close the Shellharbour City Warriors Baseball Club season for 2006. I hope you all enjoyed it and yo'all come back now, ya hear!!!

We now need to start working on the development of the new ground at Myimbarr. They then select one person in each category for the major award. We had three people nominated: Liam for the junior sportstar. Amie for the senior sports star and Terry for the clubperson star.

We were suitably entertained with a talk by the special guest Steve Rixon, ex NSW cricket catcher(oops, wicketkeeper) who gave us some funny anecdotes about his cricketing past as well as some honest opinions on todays cricket scene.

It was no surprise to any of the Warriors there when Terry was called out for the Clubperson of Clubpersons, an award which he graciously accepted with the usual aplomb that Terry is well known for and immediately showed his grand style when he dropped the clock that was the award but still made the catch, grabbing it half an inch before it hit the deck and shattered. You're still on the team Tezza!!! Terry was seen later in the poker machine area with a shell shocked look on his face muttering "I'm gonna kill the bastards that did this to me!" No mate, everyone in the club agrees that you well and truly deserved the accolade. Good speech too!!

Next came the Junior sports star awards where Liam received the award from our club and was probably pipped on the post by a Junior State representative footballer. Congratulations Liam.Little interest was shown in the proceedings by Liam after this as he was too busy checking out the talent around the club. He's a worry that boy.

We then moved on to the Senior Sports star awards in which Amie was not really surprised to be called up on stage as the Warriors' nominated player after all the work that had been done to make sure that she turned up on the night. It was a great pleasure and a surprise to Amie when she was named the Senior Sports star of stars and presented with the trophy by Councillor Don Briggs. Congratultions Amie. You'll have to make Mick to sleep on his stomach for another year so that you can go round another season with us now - translation: no babies for another twelve months.

As usual, Amie took the acceptance of the accolade in her stride although with a little bit less dramatics than Terry.

All in all, a good night was had by all.

Starting with a Grand Final win

What a great way for second Grade to finish the season. How sweet it was to get on top of the Panthers in the game that mattered after pretty well copping a pasting from them all season. My heart goes out to Jacko and his boys but you can't take anything away from the way that the whole Warriors team put it together on the day. To be able to come from 8 - 1 down to win 10 - 9 showed great determination. The whole team pulled together and when we were at the point of seven runs down there was no feelings in the dugout that the game was over. The positive attitude shown by everybody as we went out to bat in the top of the third came to fruition as we slowly clawed the runs back and then went one up, reversing the pressure and putting it all on the Panthers to come out in the last dig to have to score two runs to win, especially seeing that they were only into the second batter in their line up. How the Warriors kept the pressure on and didn't fold was a treat to watch. Kevin March, the President of the IBL, asked me to congratulate all of our team after the game. It was one of the finest examples of a game of baseball that he had seen for many years.
High praise indeed, and praise which the team had well and truly earned.
How can you pick the best from that team on the day? Everybody that went up to the plate scored at least one safe hit. How can you forget Andy's three great catches at centrefield (he batted 1000 on the day too; 2 doubles and two singles. WOW!!!!)? Adam's fantastic take at left field after missing nothing out there at training on Tuesday night?
What about the battery! Damo chucking to Pete. Pete calling Damo in and absolutely stunning the Panthers batters who are used to getting it all their own way. Didn't happen. Pete unintentionally donging the batter on the helmet while throwing to three. That was great. So what, it cost us two but on he upside it let the opposition know loud and clear that we meant business from early on. Get out of the way or get steamrolled. Then Damo kept tossing 'em in, under a lot of pressure and the smile never leaving his face as each new batter faced his pitching. Did he know something we didn't? Smiling assassin?
Matty and Adam swinging at the first pitch and both getting safe hits. Great stuff.
Not to mention the aggressive base running. For a team that hasn't had signals all year, suddenly the lights came on and everyone really put the pressure on the Panthers in the field. They felt it too. Not just one or two of them running hard, all of them with a hunger to get to the next base. Magic!
Amie safe as houses at first once again, Dave at rightfield getting the ball in quick, Dougo leading the batting and solid at shortstop. Damo following in the batting order with both really unlucky not to pierce the infield in the first dig.
And don't forget Tezza at third, glaring at em as they came up to bat, getting next to no work there so Amie didn't have to try to judge how much curve Terry put on the ball throwing to first and when it would start to swing.
You gotta mention Sue who came off injured early on after covering the ground like Phar Lap only to just have a catch tip the end of her glove. Shouldn't have gone up to bat but I think a team of wild horses at least would have been needed to stop her. Made contact too!
We can't forget the other Adam who had to start work in a new job on the day and couldn't take the field as well as birthday boy Martin who kept the bench warm and the positive attitude flowing.
What a team effort! What a team to be proud of! Don't think it gets much better than that!!!
Who can forget the feeling as Andy gloved that catch to finish off the game. What a moment.
Played hard, done well. The whole Warriors club is extremely proud of you all.

How to Post a Comment

Uncle Arthur welcomes anyone to comment on this blog.
1.
